Ratings and Sections:
We want to clarify the rules, and we shall post a complete revision of the 2012 tournament rules shortly.
There is some obscurity in the current rule.
Especially to assist people registering, and determining the appropriate section for your players, here is the revised rule for Sections and Ratings:
The system of regular Chess Federation of Canada (CFC) ratings is the primary system used for pairings for the Championship. It is the official, national chess rating system.
The CFC also maintains a Quick-play ["Active"] rating system. For 2012, we shall not use these ratings.
The Chess 'n Math Association (CMA) also maintains a rating system. We shall use CMA ratings as described below. Based on the 2012 situation, we shall use an additive of 200 to adjust CMA ratings to an approximate CFC equivalent.
The OHSCC will be rated by both the CFC (regular ratings) and by CMA.
Rating limits by section are:
Championship: > 1500 ; Intermediate: <= 1500 ; Beginner < 1100 AND with less than 2 years' tournament experience.
The player's rating on which section placement is determined will be as follows:
If a player has an established CFC regular rating (based on 25 or more games), that rating will stand.
If a player has a provisional CFC rating (based on fewer than 25 games), or is unrated CFC, then we shall check the CMA rating. If the CMA rating is established (based on 9+ tournaments, then the CMA + 200 will stand.
If both ratings are provisional, the CFC rating will stand.
If a player is unrated in both systems, then the player may choose the most appropriate section.
However, if the school has a team, in a league where games are not rated, we ask that such players who have played on the school team for more than 2 years not enter the Beginner section.
We consider league play, using clocks, recording moves, to be equivalent to tournament play.
We wish to restrict the Beginner section to true beginners, who have less than 2 years' tournament experience.
